PUPILS at Monks Park School have achieved Fairtrade status in record-breaking time.

Most schools take more than a year to prove their commitment to the cause, but the Horfield comprehensive met the five goals in seven months.

The school had to:

● Set up a Fairtrade school steering group with at least half pupils and which meets at least once a term.

● Write and adopt a Fairtrade policy which has the support of the board of governors and is signed by the head teacher.

● Use and sell Fairtrade products as much as possible.

● Learn about Fairtrade in at least three subjects in two year groups.

● Take action for Fairtrade at least once a term in the school and once a year in the community.

One of the highlights of the Monks Park effort was a Fairtrade fashion show, featuring clothes and accessories provided by Marks and Spencer. Fairtrade food was provided by Sainsbury's, the Co-op and Harvest in Gloucester Road.

The guest of honour was Martha Daniela Gonzalez, a coffee producer for Soppexca Coffee Co-operative, from Nicaragua.

Pupils have taken part in Bristol-wide Fairtrade events as well as organising their activities.
