Bristol City boss Keith Millen won't be rushed into panic signings in next transfer window

Keith Millen insisted he will not be hurried into making panic signings during January.

Bristol City's manager has spoken publicly of his desire to recruit a defender and a creative midfielder to bolster his Championship squad.

But he is adamant he will not bring in new faces for the sake of it, despite a mounting casualty list that has reduced the Robins' numbers during a demanding Christmas and new year holiday programme that has stretched his resources to breaking point.

The transfer window opened for business last Saturday and, although Millen has been busy wheeling and dealing on the telephone, he said he is not yet close to completing a deal.

While City's players have been enjoying a well-earned two-day break, Millen has been behind his desk at Ashton Gate working tirelessly in a bid to drum up business.

He said: "We know what we need and we are working hard to bring new players to the club.

"January is always a crazy time and my phone has not stopped ringing this week. We have certain targets in mind, but nothing that is imminent.

"It is not easy to persuade clubs to let their best players go midway through the season and the fees tend to be inflated. For that reason, a lot of business is done towards the end of the month."

Millen has been told by City chairman Steve Lansdown he must trim his 36-man squad before he can recruit and the Londoner is prepared to listen to bids or consider loan deals for a number of players.

But given the lack of money available to many domestic clubs, the task of farming out those individuals who are surplus to requirements is proving more difficult than in recent years.

Winger Ivan Sproule, right-back Nicky Hunt, midfielder Gavin Williams and striker John Akinde are understood to be available, but City have yet to receive an offer for any one of them.

As revealed in the Evening Post last month, Sproule is attracting interest from Scottish Premier League Hibernian. But the Edinburgh club has yet to follow up an initial inquiry with a firm offer and Sproule's future remains uncertain.

Akinde is due to return to Ashton Gate this week after completing a three-month loan spell at neighbours Bristol Rovers. But the former Ebbsfleet forward struggled to make an impression at the Memorial Stadium and, although a few lower league clubs are understood to have shown an interest, none has offered to take him, either permanently or on loan.

Out-of-favour following a series of disappointing performances earlier in the season, Hunt could be excused for wanting to revive his career elsewhere. The fact he has played so few games, however, will hardly persuade rival clubs to take a gamble on him.

And Williams, who recently returned from a loan spell at League One Yeovil, is currently injured and is not expected to be fit until the final week of January.

Millen admitted: "Not only are we not close to anything coming in, there is no movement out of the club either.

"We do need to trim the squad and we do need to get some players out, whether it's on a full transfer or a loan. But we have just come through an extremely busy period in the Championship season and there is nothing to report at this stage."

Third choice City keeper, Stephen Henderson has completed his loan move to Yeovil until the end of the season.

City have an option to recall the Irishman should either David James or Dean Gerken get injured.

“We may have had our ups and downs, even when Big John was around.
Some of us still believe, we are born optimist and that gives us the right to voice an opinion. We support Bristol CITY.”

“Sounds like PH is doing what he does best...not alot!

I agree with Glenn though, it will be nice to get a couple of new players in. Personally, as i have said for a long time, we need a decent centre half to replace Louis. Someone on the Barker/Evatt mould. Caulker has done a fine job but he wont be here more than a season, Cisse seems to be doing ok but Stewart and Fonts are up to it and Louis isnt getting any younger.

Would also be great to sign someone like Danns or Andrews, but i suspect we will not but you never know. Keef has done a fine job in sorting out Coppells mess and i have faith he will get the right man, but he must be wary of making promises as our lot will jump on anything to cause ruptions.”

“Quick. Snap McPake's hand off. Get Paul Hartley back in exchange for junior, then McPake's old man really will have something to moan about.”

“You can have Hartley back, he cannot cope with the SPL anymore. He started well then got worse at the Dons. Since he has returned from injury he has been a disgrace. My father, who is a season ticket holder says all he does is shout and bawl at everyone but does nothing himself and is out of breath by half time.

He doesnt even inspire the younger players.

Take a good penalty and free kick but you need to do more than that at a club like Aberdeen.

I like City though, i go down to tha gate every now and then. Good luck and at least you are doing better than your city rivals.”

i would settle for one genuine creative player rather than two average midfield/defenders.”

“I don't care if Keith signs the left-back and central-midfielder we desperately need on the 1st of January or the 31st of January, but it will be unacceptable if the transfer window closes and these areas have not been suitably strengthened with Championship standard players - particularly as was apparent to all we needed a replacement for Paul Hartley the minute he drove out of the Ashton Gate car park for the last time in the summer.

Many of our rivals had some very good deals lined up a long time in advance, and their transfers took place on January 1st.

If we are waiting to sell before we buy that is a concern because I do not forsee much interest in many of the players mentioned in this article, and we then run the risk of another team gazumping any prearranged verbal deal we might have in place.

I have been both impressed and encouraged by the calibre of player Keith has brought to the club.

I trust Lansdown offers Keith his full backing at this pivital point of the season - and that includes avoiding the firesale of Nicky Maynard.”
