Millen: Wingers not always best for Bristol City

Bristol City assistant boss Keith Millen believes the notion that playing wingers guarantees more crosses is a myth.

The former centre-half has noted recent supporter criticism regarding the lack of natural wide players in the Robins' team.

And the absence of Northern Ireland international Ivan Sproule through injury brings the issue into sharper focus.

Millen insists he and manager Gary Johnson will continue to select the side they feel is best-equipped to win each game. He said: "Before every match, we look at the opposition, at the players we have available and at the tactics we think will win us the game.

"Every team is different in the Championship and you cannot pick the same side every week.

"People were calling for us to play with wingers, but we only got eight crosses in during the Leicester game despite going with Ivan and Danny Haynes on the flanks.

"We had at least 12 crosses into the box in the previous game against Ipswich, even though we played without wingers."

"Supporters talk about the need to play with width, but we do whatever we feel we have to in order to win a particular game.

"If we think a team is weak in the middle, we will sometimes play the extra midfielder in there to take advantage. If we feel teams are weak out wide, then we seek to exploit that.

"Every game is different and it's a matter of the players doing the jobs we ask of them."

Bristol City are at home to struggling Reading on Saturday and midfielder Evander Sno is available again after missing the defeat at Doncaster through suspension.

Meanwhile, the Football Association is bringing the official nationwide FA Cup Trophy Tour to Ashton Gate on Wednesday, December 23.

The tour takes place from 11am-7pm and includes a 30-minute interactive FA Cup experience, including the chance to hold aloft the famous trophy. Fans must pre-register in advance at facuptrophytour.co.uk.

“These two go from bad to worse. We have a Ventriloquist Manager with a dummy on his lap( Archie Andrews) who are trying to con us with a load of rubbish to hide their mistakes. This Ventriloquist Peter Brough Johnson will be remembered as not being able to face his own mistakes.”

“Exactly Glen crosses from half way line are no good to any forward with his back to goal.Looks like we are to continue with no pace or width and boring football played between Dolman and Williams . Give somebody in the acadamy a chance who can get to the bye line and cross a ball. that would give our small forwards a chance. Its no wonder Gary is hiding he is clueless. Well soon be out Fa cup and sliding down league if this continues.”

“Gary getting Keith to do his dirty work again.

'Keith' argues the case for not using wingers by quoting a statistic which states we put in 12 crosses when not using wingers against Ipswich, and 8 crosses when using them at Leicester.

Perhaps our Pro-zone obsessed management duo need to reflect on the statistic that we scored three goals at Leicester, as opposed to none against home to Ipswich?

I would also like to ask Keith/Gary how many of those 12 crosses against Ipswich were delivered from within the final 18 yards of the pitch, and how many of them we just wellied in from Mcallister some 30-40 yards out?”
