Midfield maestro Gary Booth is Southmead Athletic's star man
Gary Booth was the stand-out performer in Southmead Athletic's 7-1 victory over Ashton United in the second round of the Suburban League Bosley Cup.
Booth produced a wonderful display, showing exactly how a central midfielder should play. He was all over the pitch, defending well, getting stuck in and winning the ball. He was also superb going forward, giving a masterclass in passing and contributing a goal.
He scored after receiving the ball outside the area and striking it with his left foot. The ball took a deflection off an Ashton defender, which caught Dan Manning, Ashton's goalkeeper, off balance.
Booth could have scored another after playing a short corner with Dan Simpson and working himself an angle, but his powerful, curling shot went inches wide of goal.
Offensively, Booth was key to Southmead, as his passing was nothing short of magnificent. He is able to play short, intricate passes as well as long-range crossfield balls. His vision created a goal for Dwain Pope as he produced a cross from the left-hand side, allowing Pope to head the ball into the far corner.
He showed a great desire to win, running hard all match, chasing lost causes and generally working hard for the team. When Southmead were in possession he always went looking for the ball, making good runs and creating space for himself.
Barry Fowler, Southmead Athletic's manager, said: "Gary's my assistant manager and he's a superb player. He used to play at a much higher level than this, in the Western League, and you can see why on this performance."
Booth said: "We played well on a hard pitch and scored some good goals. We're aiming for the treble now."

“As a spectator on Saturday I would like to second this opinion, gary did perform outstandingly, but however for me the standout player would have to had gone southmeads captain, it was a knockout performance.”
