Meteb eager to overcome language barrier
Bristol City new boy Emad Meteb will be given a crash course in English ahead of the new Championship season.
The Egypt international striker completed his long-anticipated £1.5 million move to Ashton Gate earlier this week, becoming the most expensive signing in the club's history.
And the 25-year-old, who has spent his entire career playing for Al-Ahly in Cairo, has promised to learn English.
Although he understands much of what is said to him, his spoken English is limited and interviews after his signing were conducted through a translator.
Acknowledging the importance of communication on the pitch, Meteb said: “I am ready to learn English.
“I know some already and understand much of what people are saying, but I struggle with my speech and don't want to make lots of mistakes.
“It's important I learn English for my team-mates and the coaching staff, so it is easier to communicate with them.”
Meteb revealed he decided to join City after meeting manager Gary Johnson and viewing videos of the team in action.
He said: “I have seen videos of City games and I have seen City score goals.
“I am a natural striker and I know all about Bristol City. I know the kind of supporters that are waiting to see me play.”
Although Meteb has passed a medical and signed a three-year contract, he still requires a work permit before being able to play for City.
But City boss Johnson does not anticipate any problems in this quarter. He confirmed: “As far as we're concerned, it's now up to the Government officials who issue work permits, regarding when our fans will see him play.
“Meteb has played in almost 100 per cent of his national team games and Egypt (24th) are high enough in the FIFA rankings, so we are confident of getting the work permit. As soon as we get it, he'll put on the red shirt.”
Meteb will say an emotional farewell to Al-Ahly and his legion of fans this weekend.
Now back in Egypt, the striker will attend Sunday's Confederation of African Football Champions League encounter between his former club and Zamalek in Cairo.
Johnson said: “Meteb has been with Al-Ahly since the age of 12 and he had to feel that this was the right move for him. It's a big step for him, but I think he's professional enough to take it by storm.
“The fact he is happy to come here proves this club has come a long way.”
City's first team tonight play the second friendly of their Portugal tour, taking on Blue Square Premier side Rushden and Diamonds at the Estadio Capitao Josino Da Costa (7.30pm).
