Merson leads from the gun in Yeovil 5k

Tom Merson clocked a personal best with an emphatic victory in the latest Yeovil 5k road race on Thursday night.

The Bristol & West AC runner dominated from the gun to win in a time of 15mins 05secs to slice seven seconds off the time he ran in Exeter last week.

"The course is very fast and I think I can go faster on it," said Merson. "It is a brilliant race and I really enjoyed it."

In-form Wells veteran Jon James was runner-up with Bristol & West AC junior Nathan Young third.

To complete a good night for the Bristol club Rebekkah Randall finished top woman.

● The Hogweed Trotters 5k championship took place recently at the Bitton series with Lee Pattison being crowned as this year's champion in a time of 18.00 with Will Gray (18:26) and John Curtis (19:12) second and third.

Amanda Richardson was top woman in 20:39 from Ali Poole (20:43) and Pat Curtis (20:45).

● Two Hogweed Trotters women ran the Bugatti 10k at Winchcombe, in Gloucestershire, with Angie Martin finishing in 50:34 ahead of Nicola Paice (53:54).

Andy May completed the Isle of Man marathon, in 3.16.44, ahead of Dave Wintle, in 3.41.44.

● Entries for the 2009 Easy Runner Sodbury Slog on Sunday, November 8 are now sold out with the 1,300 limit reached earlier this week.

● North Somerset AC's Sophie Thomas ran a personal best of 14.00secs in last weekend's Avon league match at Yate.

● Edward Mason returned from injury with a bang to break the Avon League senior men's high jump league record with a clearance of 1.96m, making up a little for the disappointment of missing both the Midland and National championships.

● Next month's Burnham-on-Sea 5k will comprise a relay event with three runners per teams. The winter series begins again on October 1.

● UK Athletics will be staging a Run Britain Road Show at the Holiday Inn, Deane Gate Avenue, Taunton TA1 2UA on Thursday, September 3 (7-9pm).

This meeting will give the south west running fraternity the opportunity to learn of the achievements to date of Run Britain, the realbuzzrunbritain website, plans for the future and will be particularly helpful and informative for Race Directors/Organisers as well as general information on Road Running.
