Bristol & West AC runners Tom Merson and Annabel Gummow dominated the second fixture in the Brooks Westward Cross Country League.

After a solid autumn of relay running, Merson was eager for a positive start to his league campaign and was a convincing winner on the Penrice School course, St Austell.

Likewise, teenager Annabel Gummow was in a class of her own to win the senior women's race and make it two wins out of two.

Gummow said: "It was a very solid race for me, run at around 80 per cent effort, and a good warm-up for the European Championships trials."

The 16-year-old will run the Under-20s race at Liverpool and, while she will be up against rivals three years older, she looks like being a contender for a place in the British team. "That's the aim," she said.

● Charlie Coffey defied the blustery conditions in the Brighton 10k road race to clock a personal best of 36mins 05secs for fifth place in the women's race.

The time shaved eight seconds off the Bristol & West AC runner's previous best of 36:13, which she set just over two years ago in Chichester.

In the men's race, club-mate Jon Willis battled to fifth place in a time of 30:36. It was outside his PB of 29:50, set earlier this year, but a good effort in the difficult conditions.
