Mentors for the jobless
INSPIRATIONAL and successful businesspeople are being sought to become mentors to Plymouth's young unemployed.
Plymouth City Council and its Whiz Kidz club for young entrepreneurs have teamed up to search for potential role models on the Volunteer Mentor scheme.
City businesses and organisations will receive an e-flyer advertising the new mentoring programme, which offers up to 20 hours of free training to learn the skills needed to mentor young people.
The project is aimed at professionals and experts with the knowledge and experience that would benefit 16-to-25-year-olds looking for work.

Kathy McHugo, the council's leadership associate for employment skills and education links, said: "We are looking for inspirational people with practical skills and the drive to help youngsters become more employable.
"If you think you could boost a young person's chances of finding work, we'd really love to hear from you.
"You could literally help to change a young person's life with the benefit of your wisdom and experience."
The Volunteer Mentor programme is being funded by the council's education, learning and family support department and delivered in conjunction with Whiz Kidz, the out-of-school business club run at the City Business Park and which supports young people into employment and self-employment through various initiatives.
Briefing sessions to explain more about the mentoring programme will take place on Tuesday at the City Business Park from 6pm until 7pm.
To book onto one of the mentor briefing sessions call 01752 306000.

“Another good card to play at interviews is to say- "Let me work for you for a week without pay to show you how good i am".
Also it helps to tell them during the interview that you're a non-smoker/non-drinker and will therefore rarely need to take time off because of health issues and will always have a clear head.
And mentioning that you have "Christian values" is another good card to play because bosses will know you'll never let them down..”

“"Get a job, get a job..."
What happened to careers? We see all too often the effects of youngsters doing a job because they are forced into it rather than following a career which they are interested in and offers them structure and real opportunities.”

“I left school with hardly any exam passes but it never held me back in the slightest.
As Lord Sugar said on TV-"You might look good on paper, but it's PERSONALITY that opens doors"
I was always able to play a blinder at interviews, for example I once applied for a hotel porter's job in the midlands and impressed the two owners so much that they offered me the vacant job of hotel manager..:)”

“If Plymouth had inspirational and successful businesses, perhaps it wouldn't have so many unemployed young people in the first place.”

“job offers are what people want, not some bullsh*t motivational talk about how if you try hard you get a good job”
