Membership has been a disaster
I HAVE great empathy with your correspondent Peter Gilbert (Cut numbers and save us millions ThePost October 15) but, regrettably, migration is among those vitally important policy areas we have given up the right to determine ourselves by remaining in the European Union.
During 2011, we contributed over £19 billion to the shadowy Eurocrats of Brussels and the situation is getting worse while the Euro-zone implodes.
The EU's own auditors have refused to sign off its financial accounts for 17 years in a row due to the huge scale of fraud and mis-spending. It has recently been estimated that by 2015 we will lose any surplus energy generating capacity in these islands as a direct result of the misguided Energy Efficiency Directive from Brussels.
Moreover, the European Court Of Human Rights (whilst technically not part of the EU) is demanding that the United Kingdom government grant voting rights to our prisoners by November.

Joining the European Union (mistakenly described as the Common Market in the 1970s) was undoubted the worse disaster that the people of Great Britain were ever conned into.
The only beneficiaries of the move have proved to be the leading captains of British industry (who have landed Europe-wide contracts) and the Westminster and Brussels-based 'political class'. Unless and until Britain shakes off the shackles of EU membership, this country and its people will at best stagnate while Europe becomes even less dynamic and competitive.
