Meet the heads: Mary Henderson, Westonbirt School
In her ten years as its head teacher, Mary Henderson has transformed Westonbirt School into a high-achieving, forward-looking school with a strong work ethic, excellent academic standards and a flourishing school roll.
She said: “In 2008, our best ever year, 79 per cent of our A-levels were graded A or B, and this year a quarter of our A-level candidates gained straight As. I am confident that no girl ever underachieves here.”
This consistent improvement in public exam results has seen the school march up the league tables and number among the top schools for “value added”.
Virtually all its sixth form leavers gain places at good universities to read a wide range of subjects.
These standards have been achieved without affecting the happy family atmosphere for which Westonbirt is renowned.
All pupils fulfil their full potential here without the pressures of an academic hothouse. They are nurtured by excellent staff in small classes and all enjoy this highly personalised approach to learning.
“The girls are further inspired by our beautiful rural setting, which is ideal for education,” said Mrs Henderson, pictured here against the backdrop of the grade 1 listed former stately home that houses Westonbirt School.
“Parents appreciate the safety our secluded site offers their daughters, away from the temptations of a big city.”
Not surprisingly, demand for places continues to grow, even during the current economic climate.
She said: “Since 1999, pupil numbers have increased by 35 per cent. Westonbirt attracts many families from North Bristol, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Somerset and South Wales, as well as boarders from further afield. The vast majority of our pupils are British, while minority expatriate and international contingents broaden the girls’ horizons and ensure that the school has a global outlook.”
Whether they join as boarders or day girls, all pupils enjoy the benefits of a full boarding school. Day girls may even stay one night a week free of charge and for additional nights for a small cost. Westonbirt is famous for the flexibility of its boarding.
Mrs Henderson said: “We began the autumn term with record numbers in the sixth form, with many girls joining from other independent or state schools expressly to take advantage of the excellent preparation we provide for university entry. Whenever they join us and whatever their background, all girls quickly feel at home here.”
With an extensive school transport service operating daily, it has never been easier for children to attend, subject to the availability of places. Any interested families wishing to find out more are invited to the school’s open day on Saturday, October 10 from 10am-1pm.
