Action has been taken to ease flooding problems in a village in South Gloucestershire.

In recent years, homes and roads in Cowhill, near Thornbury, have been affected by rainwater that has been unable to drain away fast enough.

At least one home has been damaged as a result and roads have suffered from deep flooding.

But work has now been completed that should solve the problem.

Last year, people living in the area met with South Gloucestershire Council and the Lower Severn Drainage Board to look at possible solutions.

The meeting was organised by South Gloucestershire councillor Matthew Riddle, who said the council had now installed a new and bigger culvert under the road leading to Lower Cowhill.

He said: "Local landowners, in conjunction with the drainage board, have upgraded another culvert on farmland. This should help the flow of water that comes through Cowhill and reduce the flooding risk to properties."

Mr Riddle has also lobbied the drainage board to cut back vegetation in drainage ditches, known as rhines, earlier in the summer to help reduce the risk of flooding.

He said: "Over the last two years we have seen torrential rain in late summer and I hope that by cutting back the rhines earlier, this will help the flow of water out into the River Severn.

"The water that comes through Cowhill actually flows out of Littleton Pill so it has some way to travel before it can enter the river at low tide."
