BRISTOL City winger Albert Adomah has launched an outspoken defence of manager Derek Mcinnes ahead of Sunday's crunch Championship showdown with Charlton Athletic.

If McInnes is coming under increasing pressure following a dismal sequence of six straight defeats, Adomah believes the players are to blame for plunging the club into another relegation battle.

While the manager retains the backing of club owner Steve Lansdown and the first-team squad, a growing number of disgruntled supporters are beginning to question the Scot's tactics and team selection.

But Adomah is having none of it and insists he and his team-mates must shoulder full responsibility for recent results.

In a brutally frank interview, the Ghana international, pictured, posed the question: "Why call for the manager to be sacked when you can sack the players instead?"

He added: "It is a fact of life that managers come under pressure when results are poor and that is beginning to happen to the gaffer here.

"When results don't go for us, people are always quick to blame the manager.

"But he picks the team he believes is the right one and, once we cross the white line, it is up to the players to do the business.

"He kept us up when we were struggling last season and we have a responsibility to perform for him now.

"I can see that the manager is working hard and the players are all behind him. At the end of the day, it is down to the players."

Although the buck usually stops with the manager, Adomah feels he is letting McInnes down right now.

He went on: "I have not played at my best for a while now and, at the moment, I feel like a passenger in the team.

"I reckon I've done okay in some games but, for me, okay is not good enough.

"I always work hard, but people expect more of me and I have to try and do more.

"I'm no different from anyone else – if I don't perform, then I don't deserve to be in the team."

It may be the case that City can afford to fail against Charlton and still retain their Championship status, but it certainly feels like a must-win contest.

Acknowledging the importance of Sunday's game, Adomah is urging hard-pressed City fans to rally behind their team once more.

He said: "I think the supporters can see we are working hard and they have been behind us for most of the season.

"The only time I can remember us being booed off was after we lost that late goal to Burnley, which was hard to take.

"I feel they are with us, but we know we have to perform to keep them on side.

"It is hard when the manager picks the right team and then you lose, because the fans will then say it was the wrong team. We need them to stay behind us no matter what team is out there on the pitch.

"I don't think it is down to the team selection or the system. Whatever players and shape we have gone with, we have scored goals but conceded even more.

"It doesn't matter how many you score at the one end if you have the worst defensive record in the league."

“Whatever any of us think about the squad and the manager, the point is we are second from bottom. Although i like McInnes and hope he can turn it around, I'm not holding my breath for sure. Why not ? Because we keep getting turned right over by average teams. For example, Burnley put four past us. I don't think they will score four away from home again this season. I think a loss at home this weekend will put us in as bad a situation as any in recent years.”

“My confidence remains sky high until City kick a ball.

A clean sheet is a dull and distant memory.

My disbelief at Derek being unable to deal with the elephant in the room is confounding.

Despite all this our entire squad is NOT a sick joke. We have a number of players- pretty much all the forwards who are very exciting or at the very least capable players in the Championship. The point I am making is that it is not helpful or constructive to fire off damning statements about how dire our club is. Things are going very very wrong and Derek is responsible for this and responsible for turning it around.

The burden true City fans have to carry is that we almost always have to take the rough with the rough because there is seldom any smooth. A losing relegation position team needs a lot more encouragement and support that a winning one. Supporters who only sing when we're winning tend to stay at home and make disparaging comments on web sites.”

“RedNemesis1 - there are good and bad parts in a joke and even in your posts as with all things in life.

Most of us want the club to succeed but there is no point in saying all is well in the garden when it clearly is not.

Next to bottom and no games this season without conceding a goal- I rest my case!

It would be great if we kept a clean sheet on it. Are you betting on that?”

“Albert - thanyou for your honesty, from what I read here I believe the majority of the team could say the same if they were as honest.
The answer is simple, take the pressure off the gaffer by winning - easy to say isn't it ???”

    “Burwallian

You said on your post on Wednesday, November 07 2012 : "The squad are a sick joke and yet another gaome without a clean sheet!"

Your words not mine- So that includes Albert who you say you "respect and highly rate."

Really? It's all very well sounding off but why do you persist in doing down our entire club?

Steve Davies or Sam Baldock are not sick jokes, our 'entire' squad are not "sick jokes"

Sadly some of our so called fans are.

Times are so tough- yet again- but despite us desperately needing new players and some urgent results the last thing we need is fans branding our entire squad a sick joke.”

“Albert like your sentiments and I highly rate and respect you as a player but.....

Everyone is saying the same sort of thing but what happens?

It all rings hollow and the only way to prove it is by winning and not letting in goals for a few matches! SIMPLE.

Do all the players think the same and are they all 110% behind him to fight and prove that Derek is the right man for the task?”

“The squad should be Championship standard, so injured players, can be replaced with other Championship standard players!

Lets get real, we don't have eleven Championship standard players, without injuries!

Who brought most of them in! Who sanctioned the signings!”

“Yeah it is probably harder for Albert than most as there is an air of expectancy when he gets the ball - he is shouldering a lot of hope. McInnes has a few more chances to show some man management and get them to play without fear, which is hard when confidence is so low...”

    “Very honest assesment.

However, you can't have it both ways.McIness "kept us up" but it's not hus fault when we're on our way down with players he's signed.

We have had some bad luck with injuries (Left Back in particular) but so do other clubs and, at the moment we have a player training with us who's had a diabolical injury record.

We have 6 players injured out of a squad of 26 that doesn't include players like Bobby Reid, Aaron Holloway or any other of our 12 strong U21 squad so that should be enough.”
