Wessex Red is a partnership between the University of the West of England, University of Bristol and Wessex Bus.

They operate nine routes across Bristol – all of which are available to the public – with the latest additions being the 13 service from Broadmead to Bradley Stoke via Fishponds and the 19 service from the Centre to Filton via Cotham.

Steve Ward, Travel Planner at UWE Bristol said: "Any member of the public can now make a short journey for just £1 cash.

"Using our services is now as easy as 1-2-3: £1 for a short journey, £2 for any other single journey, and £3 for all-day travel.

"We are responding to the Bristol Mayor's aim to see lower fares and higher quality buses in Bristol and look forward to continuing to grow our services in the city."

Tony Clayton, Sustainability Manager for Transport at the University of Bristol, said: "These lower prices will hopefully encourage people to use the Wessex Red bus service more and leave the car at home.

"It's not just a service for students – everyone in the city can jump on board and benefit from cheaper travel across the city."

“Their average costs are £1.20. That's from the former transport exec. If you want me to be exact, subpoena me to a ****ing courtroom.”

“@davegould23 - sorry but your comments are just getting more and more confusing:

"their competitor [First] is making about £1.20 per passenger journey"

"They might only be making £1 per journey, I don't have access to those figures."

"their average costs per journey is £1.20"

So are they making £1 or £1.20? Is their average costs £1 or £1.20? Or £1.80??

Can you give readers more confidence that you know what you're talking about...?”

“"You mean that's what their passengers are paying First"

No. The lowest Worst bus fare in Bristol is around £1.80 for a single, with most fares around £3. They might only be making £1 per journey, I don't have access to those figures. I do know that their average costs per journey is £1.20.”

"their competitor is making about £1.20 per passenger journey"

You mean that's what their passengers are paying First - not what profit they're making. Otherwise they would have made £60m profit last year!

Remember a few years ago the council tendered lots of routes and surprise guess what, only First decided they were worth bidding for. Can't be that attractive a market if there's only one bidder.

Easier I guess for Wessex to charge less as they can cherry-pick routes and times, they don't have the public demanding they provide services to car-dominated suburbs at 5am and 11pm - which inevitably means running empty buses.”

“@Tiny_Steve, couldn't tell you as I live at the other end of the city.

I will say it seems a bit odd to compete in a couple of small suburbs of the city when their competitor is making about £1.20 per passenger journey in the next suburb.”

“@davegould23 - not sure what you mean? Don't Wessex and First both compete in Fishponds and Filton?”

“Why won't Wessex compete with Worst Bus? Surely they can make more profit doing that than £1 for 3 stops?”

If it wasn't needed why has there been such a load of complaints to First when they withdrew their 3 stop hop?”
