BUS fares campaigner Daniel Farr met with Bristol mayor George Ferguson and Bristol North West MP Charlotte Leslie to discuss his petition to reduce First Bus fares.

Mr Farr, a 33-yearol-old graphic designer, started his petition in December, 2012. He needs only 81 more signatures to reach 3,500 and trigger a council debate.

Ms Leslie said increasing competition into the Bristol bus network, introducing Oyster-style cards and First’s consultation on fares were discussed at today’s meeting.

First Bus announced they would be reviewing fares at a press conference held days before a Make Fares Fair protest at Malborough Street Bus Station earlier this month.

The company says high fares in Bristol are partly a consequence of slow traffic speeds in the city.

A spokeswoman has encouraged passengers to engage with the consultation which is set to be launched soon.

“"The company says high fares in Bristol are partly a consequence of slow traffic speeds in the city."

Quite right! Years of expensive and unreliable bus services have driven more and more people into cars.”

“bokbokk, how do you suggest people with disabilities or illnesses which prevent them from holding a driving licence vote with our feet? Some of us have no choice but to use public transport.”

“bokbokk, how do you suggest non-drivers "vote with their feet"? For some of us public transport is our only option because finances or medical conditions make driving a non-option.”

I remember Gary Hopkins saying that GBBN was needed to speed up bus transport in Bristol, and that once it was in place, bus fares should fall.

Is First Bus saying that Gary Hopkins was LYING ? Or are First Bus saying that GBBN is a FAILURE ?”

    “This is really quite simple:

    * Keep the 'good' tickets: e.g £4.00 First Day /£2.90 night

    * Charge £1.50 adult / £1.00 child flat rate per single journey

    * Introduce 'Oyster-style' card payment, paid for by any money that has been allocated for daft route improvement/BRT-type government grants (I took a 35 min trip into town recently, 15 mins at least of which was taken up with people messing around with change due to current oblique pricing structure for anything other than a day/night ticket - this would solve journey time problems instantly)

And that's about it! Do I get a prize?”

“"High fares are partly a consequence to slow traffic" I have never in my life heard such a load of cods wallop spoken in my life.

I can understand it being expensive for one car driver but a bus with say 50 passengers how much is this premium per passenger and even then I can get into town and out about 6 times on a gallon of diesel so about £1 per journey and that's paying full duty and VAT that the bus companies do not pay.

You're going to have to find better excuses than that if you want to continue robbing the good folk of Bristol and the surrounding areas.”

“Stop whining about bus fares. Vote with your feet if you don't like the price.”
