A father of two sons in the Royal Marines is walking around the South West coast to raise money for a special centre which helps rehabilitate injured servicemen.

Duncan Nicoll, 60, from Clevedon, will set off on his 630-mile trip on Sunday which will see him walk from Minehead to Poole in Dorset.

Mr Nicoll, who served in the Royal Navy for 12 years, has two sons in the Royal Marines.

Tom, 22, joined up when he was just 16 and has served as part of 42 Commando, fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan. Tom was injured while on duty after he was thrown off a Land Rover while coming under fire from enemy troops.

He spent two months recovering at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham before returning to work as a corporal physical training instructor at Lympstone Commando Training centre near Exmouth.

Mr Nicoll's other son, Dan, 26, who lives in Clevedon and runs a property maintenance business, is a member of the Royal Marine Reserves. The walk – called Walk for H Company – will raise money for Hasler Company, based at HMS Drake in Plymouth.

The centre, set up by the Royal Navy and the Royal Marines, works with servicemen and women who have returned home after being seriously injured in battle, offering them support, rehabilitation and therapeutic services.

It is the first time that Mr Nicoll has undertaken such a challenge and he is hoping to complete it by the end of November.

He plans to camp out each night along the route and has been supplied with equipment by the Royal Marine training centre where Tom is based.

Mr Nicoll said: "I am doing the walk because I wanted to give something back to the boys and girls who are serving our country.

"Because I have two sons in the Royal Marines, it is a cause very close to my heart."

People can donate to the fund by making cheques payable to Walk for H Company and dropping them into Seeleys in Hill Road, Clevedon. Donations can also be made at HSBC, The Triangle, Clevedon.
