Marine Lake hopes to secure lottery funding to fix leaking wall
A DETAILED bid for £350,000 of Lottery funding to help pay for repairs to Clevedon's leaky Marine Lake is to be drawn up.
North Somerset Council has received £40,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to enable it to carry out a detailed evaluation of the sea wall around the lake, which has been leaking badly for several years.

The bid for the £40,000 – which was put together by North Somerset, Clevedon Town Council, the Marine Lake Enthusiasts Society (MARLENS) and Clevedon – was submitted earlier this year.
Work will now start on preparing a comprehensive business plan for the lake which will be submitted as part of a second round application for the £350,000 funding.

North Somerset executive member for marine environment Councillor Peter Bryant said: "We are delighted to have been successful in this lottery application.
"Clevedon sea front is a fantastic beauty spot and the Marine Lake is a really important part of the landscape and so it has been a priority to try and preserve it for the future.
" I am also pleased to have been able to work with the local community in achieving this bid and without their help this would not have happened."
The seafront lake, which opened in 1929, is a popular leisure facility in the town and is used by a number of community groups for water sports.
But a leak in the outer wall of the lake near the Salthouse Fields means the water level keeps lowering and the usable area of the lake is being drastically reduced. Users have to wait for the high tides to crash over the crumbling sea wall and refill the lake.
Over the years North Somerset Council has spent thousands of pounds on carrying out piecemeal repairs of the lake. In the past, pumps were used to ensure there was enough water in the lake for the various activities.
The Marine Lake Enthusiasts Society which uses the lake each year for its annual festival, has also carried out temporary repairs, plugging the holes using sawdust and ashes.
MARLENS chairman Joe Norman said: "We are delighted at this news and this reward for all the hard work that many people have put into this project."
