Marc Cooper: Geeky Christmas gadget gift list
In a month from now, it will be Boxing Day, and Christmas will be more or less over for another year. It's a dreadful thought, isn't it?
The chances are that you will be slumped on a sofa, contemplating cold turkey sandwiches, watching advertisements for new year sales on television, and sitting next to an annoying relative who you are no longer speaking to.
Christmas presents will have been opened and discarded, temperatures raised and tears shed. And outside it will be raining.
And yes, it is true that those sofa ads on the telly have been telling us about their sales since Easter, and I'd like nothing more than to stick my turkey-carving fork into Martin Kemp's blue eyes.
You may not have started roasting your chestnuts yet, but there really is no escaping the fact that Christmas is just around the corner.
Yes, it's true that those sofa ads on the telly have been telling us about their sales since Easter, and I'd like nothing more than to stick my turkey-carving fork into Martin Kemp's blue eyes.
But nBut not even the most fervent anti-Christmas folk among us can go a day without hearing the ringing of festive bells, and smelling those German sausages being slowly turned and burned in Broadmead.
More than that, the techie, nerdy geeks of this world know that this time of year can only mean one thing – gadget heaven.
Take my Aunt Flo, for example. She has no idea what an Asus netbook is. For all she knows it could be a fishing manual for Scouts.
If I ask her for a Zune, she could quite easily head to Boots and enquire at the men's toiletries department.
There is, as ever, a staggering array of 'must-have' gadgets and toys to fill our Christmas stockings this year.
But despite all the usual Santa themed hoo-hah pouring from our TV sets, there isn't a definitive must-have gadget this Christmas.
It isn't as simple and prescriptive as that year when the Wii came out, or that time a few years back when everyone got an iPod.
So, in case you're struggling, here are the top 10 gadgets you can feel free to buy me this Christmas, in no particular order:
1. Sony PSP Go (£249): this new portable games console does away with some of the hardware and relies on downloadable games and apps.
2. Amazon Kindle (£200): it's been a slow build for this bit of kit, but 2010 is expected to be the year that the e-reader really takes off.
3. iPod Nano (£115): the latest version of the stylish MP3 player now has a camera with video capture and FM radio.
4. Wii Fit Plus (£39): upgrade for the Nintendo game that includes the new nunchuck controller.
5. Lucky Voice Party Box (£49): kit created by the people behind a chain of karaoke bars that turns your PC into a karaoke machine.
6. DJ Hero (£109): become king of the decks with this celeb-sponsored game (Jay-Z, Eminem), which introduces the new turntable controller.
7. Star Wars Force Trainer (£99): put on the headset and use the power of your mind to make the ball levitate in the tube.
8. Samsung B8000 (£1,200): super-slim at just 2.9cm thick, this LED TV comes in a number of screen sizes.
9. Modern Warfare 2 (£49): the direct sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, where you join a multinational anti-terrorist squad.
10. Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0 (£179): these programmable robots have ultrasonic, sound, touch and all-new colour sensors.
See? There are so many gadgets to be excited about, I really can't understand why we get all stressed out about a bit of tinsel and turkey.
I do hope you have a good one.
