Manifesto pledge to build Bristol pool
Council leader Barbara Janke has pledged to build a new swimming pool in Speedwell.
It would probably be built at Bristol Brunel Academy in Speedwell Road, previously known as Speedwell Technology College.
The council's ruling Liberal Democrats promised a new pool in the area as one of their manifesto commitments at the local elections last June.
The old swimming pool, in Whitefield Road, closed in 2005, together with several other pools in the city.
Mrs Janke has made sure money for a new pool has been included in the council's Medium-Term Financial Plan for next year (2011/12) which has just been published.
The document outlines spending plans for the next three years and builds in assumptions about government cuts whichever party is in power at Westminster after the General Election.
Mrs Janke said: "We have been given very little guidance about the likely size of cutbacks."
A six-lane pool, a learner pool and ancillary facilities would be added to sports and health facilities at the academy which opened three years ago.

“This is fantastic news! Well done to Patrick Hassell as well for making this possible. Lots of the people who used Speedwell Pool have had to squeeze their clubs and friends in to Kingswood Leisure Centre in South Glos which has put huge strain on KLC and meant that public swimming is minimal.
Schools, groups and the public can once again be proud in our community.”
