Mangotsfield's FA Cup hopes are ended by Forest Green
Mangotsfield United 1 Forest Green Rovers 2: Mangotsfield United's hopes of reaching the first round proper of the FA Cup came to nothing after they failed to capitalise on several first-half chances.
But, despite the disappointment of failing to go into yesterday's draw, Mangotsfield had the satisfaction of their best attendance for many seasons, with a gate of 946.
And manager Phil Bater was disappointed they could not send their supporters home happy.
"We missed an opportunity of going through to the first round and, despite having a good crowd, we failed to rouse them to get behind us and roar us on, which would have made a difference," he said.
"We put a lot of effort into the game but were lacking in front of goal, where we never looked dangerous."
Forest Green's injury-hit side took the lead in the seventh minute, when Mangotsfield skipper Rob Scott brought down Danny Powell in the penalty area and David Brown beat goalkeeper Tony Court from the spot.
Mangotsfield hit back and could have equalised minutes later when unmarked central defender Mike Trought headed over an in-swinging corner from James Pilling.
Soon after, Mitchell Page released fellow striker Tom Knighton, but Rovers goalkeeper Terry Burton was quickly off his line to save at his feet.
A Pilling free-kick from the left created a chance for Page at the far post, but the ball glanced off his head and went wide
Then, just before half-time, Kyle Tooze and Neil Arndale linked up to create an opening, only for Tooze's shot to drift just wide of a post.
Jonathan Smith brought a good early save from Court at the start of the second half and from the resulting corner Sean Rigg saw his header go over the crossbar.
Arndale's runs from deep inside his own half were posing problems for the Forest Green defence and he was just off target with well-struck drive when he would have been better passing to two unmarked colleagues in front of goal.
Powell had the ball in the Mangotsfield net in the 65th minute, but the effort was ruled out for offside and, with a quarter of hour left, Mangotsfield manager Bater took off striker Page and sent on central defender Scott Hendy to play up front in a bid to liven things up.
Forest Green added a second goal in the 82nd minute when Steve Davies and Rigg combined in a break down the left which ended with Davies beating Court from close range.
Mangotsfield fought back, with Jason Wood having a free-kick saved by Burton before they pulled a goal back in the 87th minute when another Wood free-kick created the opening for Pilling to score from close range.
In the time added on, Pilling was barged over in the Forest Green penalty area but referee Bennett waved away appeals for a spot-kick.
