She has served up meals for more than 5,000 schoolchildren but now dinner lady Gwen Fussell has hung up her apron for good.

Gwen, 81, retired from Mangotsfield School after 21 years working in the canteen, and there was a special presentation to mark the occasion in school's Brunel Restaurant.

Earlier this year it was discovered that Gwen was the oldest mid-day supervisor employed by South Gloucestershire County Council.

Andrew Wait, deputy head, said "Gwen has been an inspiration for Mangotsfield students for more than 20 years. She is everybody's favourite grandmother. Students are never rude as there is mutual respect between them. Gwen will be missed by all."

Gwen will miss working at the school and said she is only leaving because her friend won't be able to give her a lift in to school each day.

Gwen said "I get on with all the kids and have a bit of fun. I've loved working here and will miss it but I have three children and nine grandchildren and will be able to see them more often."
