1892: Walter Hagen, one of golf's most flamboyant characters, was born. He helped popularise the game in the 1920s and elevate the status of the professional golfer in the United States and Britain. He won 11 majors before his death in 1969.

1983: Spain's football team produced an amazing result in a European Championship qualifying match. Needing to win by 11 clear goals against Malta, they won 12-1 in Seville to qualify and set the record for the highest score in the competition.

1999: The British Boxing Board of Control was placed into administration in a bid to ensure its long-term survival. The development came after Michael Watson won his high-profile and costly lawsuit against the Board.

2001: Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier, despite still being on sick leave after heart surgery, pulled off a stunning transfer coup with the loan signing of Nicolas Anelka from Paris St Germain.

2004: Velimir Zajec was appointed permanent manager of Portsmouth after Harry Redknapp quit the club. Zajec was replaced in April 2005 by Alain Perrin.

2005: UEFA rejected Middlesbrough defender Abel Xavier's appeal against his 18-month ban imposed for testing positive for an anabolic steroid.

2006: England fast bowler Steve Harmison announced his retirement from one-day international cricket.

2007: Fulham announced that Lawrie Sanchez had left his post as manager "with immediate effect". He was succeeded by current boss Roy Hodgson.

2008: Manchester United won the Club World Cup by beating LDU Quito 1-0 in the final in Japan.

2008: Real Madrid announced they had agreed a deal to sign France midfielder Lassana Diarra from Portsmouth, subject to a medical.
