The partner of a woman who was shot in a Bristol flat has told a jury he saw a gunman fire four bullets.

Bristol Crown Court has heard a claim Julie Heron was shot in her left leg because she accepted a Ford Focus from a man to cover a £400 debt and her son sold on the car in Cardiff.

It is alleged 32-year-old Terry McDonagh tracked her down, saying the car was his and he wanted it back.

When she couldn't produce it, the court heard he produced a handgun and shot her just below the knee.

McDonagh, 32, of Bonnington Walk in Lockleaze, denies possessing a prohibited weapon and causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Ms Heron's partner Steven Hall told the jury some Irish men took him in their transit van to Cardiff to try and track down Ms Heron and reclaim the Ford Focus.

He told the court the van was pulled over by police and he spent two-and-a-half days locked in the back before he was able to get out.

Mr Hall said he and Ms Heron were at a mutual friend's flat at Owen Henry House in Conduit Place, St Paul's, when an Irishman entered and produced a handgun before shooting Miss Heron.

Mr Hall said: "He fired four shots. One bullet fell on the floor, the other grazed her leg, one went through her calf and one went in the settee."

Ms Heron, a mother of nine with nine grandchildren, who admitted she was smoking crack at the time, was shot through her leg.

The court has been told how children were continually contacted by a man with an Irish accent who threatened Ms Heron would be shot if she didn't hand the car over.

The case continues at Bristol Crown Court.
