Judge Carol Hagen told him: "I give you credit for your guilty pleas.
"You have taken steps to address the underlying cause of the offending. It seems to me that in the particular circumstances I can impose a community order.
"I am as confident as I may be you will continue on the path you have started."
The judge handed Kirk 12 months' supervision, with a 12 months alcohol treatment requirement.
James Haskell, prosecuting, said Kirk had claimed he was simply taking the weapons from his former wife's home to his own address.
Mr Haskell told the court: "He stopped for a drink on the way home."
Nadeem Aullybocus, defending, said his client had taken measures not to make it obvious he had the sword and knife on him.
He told the court: "He has acknowledged his issue (regarding alcohol) and he did something about it.
"He had a cabinet and collected these items.
