Forces spokesman Wayne Baker said: "A man suffered a throat injury and was taken to the BRI. His injury is not as serious as first thought.
"Police believe two men were arguing when the victim was assaulted by the second man. It is thought a weapon was used during the assault.
"Officers are keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the incident."
Witnesses should call Bristol CID on the force's new non-emergency number 101.
