Bristol teenager who attacked and threatened to kill his partner is jailed for a year

A HORFIELD teenager who threatened to kill his partner and assaulted her has been jailed for a year.

Christopher Thomas was in a relationship with Kianna McNeil for four years but was concerned about their future, Bristol Crown Court heard. After the couple argued, Thomas attacked her and threatened to kill her, telling her: "If I can't have you, no one will."

Thomas, 18, of Green Close, pleaded guilty to making a threat to kill in October as well as assault occasioning actual bodily harm and battery in September.

The recorder, Mr Abbott, told him: "All that can be said is that you pleaded guilty at the very earliest opportunity."

Sally Warhurst, prosecuting, said Thomas assaulted Miss McNeil, following an argument in September, kicking her four times in the leg as she was on the floor and forcing her own hands to punch herself.

He was arrested, the court heard, but after being released on condition he had no contact with his girlfriend, she retracted her complaint against him.

The next month Thomas visited Miss McNeil again and threatened to kill himself, Mrs Warhurst said.

She told the court: "Miss McNeil intervened. He took her into a headlock and she tried to talk him back into the house. She managed to talk him into handing the knife back and both went into her flat to talk."

Though Thomas was told he could stay the night he then threatened his victim again, grabbing her windpipe so she couldn't breathe, the court heard.

Mrs Warhurst said: "She was coughing and her throat felt sore.

"The defendant said 'Do you like the smell of gas? I'll kill us all'. He turned on the gas cooker and the victim tried to get him to turn the gas off. He pushed her to the floor and the victim's housemate rang her father for help as well as the police."

Thomas made full admissions when interviewed, telling police he was taking anti-depressants, had anger management issues and regretted what happened.

Nicholas Arthur, defending, stressed abuse was not a constant throughout the couple's relationship. He said: "He recognises his conduct went significantly beyond what could be consistent with a non-custodial sentence."
