A 62-YEAR-OLD man due to face trial over multiple sex assault allegations is believed to have hanged himself.

John Smith, of Church Road, St George, was facing 12 counts of rape of a girl aged under 13, plus further charges of sexual activity with a girl and inciting a girl into sexual activity.

He failed to attend the scheduled start of his trial at Bristol Crown Court yesterday morning and police later confirmed that at 7.30am they had found the body of a man in St George's Park.
