A 30-year-old man has admitted growing cannabis plants with a street value of more than £22,000.

Matthew Chandler, of Kellaway Avenue, Bishopston pleaded guilty to producing 4.94kg of cannabis at an address in Denmark Place, in January.

Mark Humphries, prosecuting, told Bristol Magistrates' Court heard that police officers attended Denmark Place and discovered two bedrooms that had been adapted with plastic lighting and lamps to grow cannabis.

"In one room officers discovered 42 mature cannabis plants, in the other 12 plants were found," he said.

"Both rooms had solely been given over to cannabis production.Analysis suggests that the cannabis would be worth £22,881."

Mr Humphries said given the scale of the operation that the Crown believed magistrates did not have sufficient powers to deal with the case and that it should be committed to crown court.

Chandler will be sentenced at appear at Bristol Crown Court on April 27.
