WESTON-SUPER-MARE: A MAN had to be evacuated from his home during the early hours of yesterday morning after a fire broke out in a flat above.

Two crews of firefighters were called to a Victorian house divided into four flats in Clevedon Road at 3.54am.

They discovered a small fire in a second-floor, one-bed room flat and evacuated a man living below as a precaution.

None of the other flats in the block were occupied at the time of the incident.

Four fire fighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire, which mainly caused smoke damage, using a hose reel.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by fire officers and the police.

Healthy living theme

HENGROVE: Pupils at Perry Court Junior School really got their teeth into healthy living during a week of activities.

The school focused on nourishing food, tasting healthy snacks and making fruit kebabs and milkshakes.

A team from the Better Food Company, in St Werburgh's, showed the children how to make mayonnaise to serve with organic, locally-grown salad.

Pupils also took part in a range of sporting activities. Year 6 children took part in a sports festival in Whitchurch and Year 5 a rugby tournament, while Year 4 gave a performance with a healthy living theme.

Kate Gerrish, the school's healthy living co-ordinator, said: "Everyone has really enjoyed the week and learned a lot."
