A man was left with a serious head injury after he was hit with a piece of wood in Kingswood.

He was arguing with a woman in Downend Road, near its junction with Regent Street, when another man came along, hit him and then ran off.

At first the victim refused medical treatment and went home with the woman, but his condition deteriorated and he was taken to Frenchay Hospital.

The woman also needed treatment for a hand injury.

A 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault causing actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.

The incident happened at about 2.20am on Sunday.
