A man has appeared in court today charged with the murder of 17-year-old Shevon Wilson in a Bristol street.

Shevon was stabbed in the chest outside the World's End Inn, St George, in the early hours of Saturday and died at Frenchay Hospital shortly afterwards.

Sam Lengfeld, 23, of Clovelly Road, St George, appeared before Bristol Magistrates' Court today.

He was remanded in custody to appear via videolink at Bristol Crown Court on September 22.

Two other men, aged 18 and 20, who were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm, have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Chief Superintendent for Bristol John Stratford said the motive for the incident was not yet known.

He said: "At this early stage there's nothing to suggest this was a gang-related, or racially-motivated incident.

"It is too early to say what the motive was. We just do not know.

"However, we are following a number of lines of enquiry to identify the motive behind this tragic incident.

"This is an area of Bristol where there have been issues involving youths on the streets and there have been concerns raised.

"There have been a small number of people who have caused problems, but we would not count Shevon in that number.

"We know the young people causing upset in the communities and we are determined to deal with them."

Mr Stratford was also keen to reassure residents in St George and surrounding areas that this was an isolated incident.

"It is very unusual and that's what we're trying to stress to the local community," he said. "We don't want people seeing this as 'broken Britain comes to Bristol'.

"When you compare Bristol to other core cities, we have less knife crime. For the year to date, knife crime is down 13.1 per cent on last year, meaning there have been 34 fewer victims."

So far this year, there have been 226 knife crimes in Bristol, but that figure includes offences such as carrying a bladed article in public. Fewer than 100 injuries have been inflicted with bladed or pointed articles in 2009.

Last night, Labour councillor Ron Stone said: "I was horrified to hear of the tragic stabbing of Shevon Wilson over last weekend."

Mr Stone said he was shocked and disgusted to hear that first-aider 22-year-old Sam Taylor, who tried to help Shevon and another injured person, was prevented from doing so by people at the scene, as reported in yesterday's Bristol Evening Post.

He said: "It is unacceptable that onlookers prevented medical or first aid emergency action from being administered to Shevon."

Councillor Stone also believes it is important to engage young people to discourage anti-social behaviour in East Bristol.

Witnesses should call Bristol CID on 0845 456 7000 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
