Man charged after Bristol air tussle
A man who was allegedly drunk and disorderly on board a flight prevented the aircraft from landing at Bristol International Airport because of his behaviour, a court was told.
Jonathan Towell, aged 40, of Portobello, Dublin, appeared before North Somerset Magistrates Court.
He faced two charges, one of being drunk and disorderly on board an aircraft and one of recklessly or negligently acting in a manner likely to endanger an aircraft.
Towell did not enter a plea to either of the charges.
Alison Cawse prosecuting told the court the incident had occurred on May 9, while Towell was on board a Boeing 737-800 Ryan air flight from Dublin to Bristol.
She said Towell had been drunk and abusive to the aircraft supervisor and had tried to make his way to the captain during landing and as a result the landing was abandoned.
She said a second attempt was made and Towell had to be restrained in his seat by other passengers so the plane could ground.
Towell was released on bail to appear at Bristol Crown Court on July 22.
