Mr Nelmes was taken to hospital following an assault at about 5pm on Saturday, but was pronounced dead later that evening.

The former Ridings High School pupil bled to death after he was allegedly stabbed a number of times at a house managed by Keystones Mental Health Support Services, which offers care and support to adults with mental health needs.

Shaven-headed Carter, of Filton Avenue, Horfield, Bristol, spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.

Police had initially said that the incident was being treated as suspicious, but on Sunday they confirmed that their investigation had become a murder inquiry.

A post-mortem examination revealed Mr Nelmes had died as a result of blood loss, caused by multiple stab wounds that he had suffered.

Officers said the incident was “isolated and self contained”, but police have been providing high-profile patrols in the area to reassure members of the local community and to enable them to pass on information to officers.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact the police by telephoning 101 or contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
