Music, entertainment and performance will lead up to the big switch on as the German Christmas market also opens for business.

On Friday, November 9, a procession of Lost Boy drummers and 150-strong procession of youth theatre school children, will sing sea shanties and dance their way from The Galleries in Broadmead, past The Podium, into Quakers Friars and along George White Street to Cabot Circus for the grand finale.

Crowds will be then be treated to a spectacular show from Bristol-based Cirque Bijou featuring acrobats, stilt walkers and jugglers, before the Christmas lights are illuminated.

The event also marks the opening of the ever-popular German Christmas Market. As well as 40 chalet market stalls selling traditional crafts and gifts, there will be mouth-watering festive German food and drink.

The central display for this year will once again house a 13-metre high Christmas pyramid, a tree, lights and nativity scene, bar, cafe, and children's carousel.

Kevin Duffy, Cabot Circus centre director, said: "This year we are bringing the magic to Bristol Shopping Quarter with a spectacular show to mark the start of the Christmas shopping season. Bristol Old Vic is renowned for its festive performances and our Christmas lights event will provide excitement and theatre in the heart of the city, for all the family."

An eco-friendly skating rink, at The Podium, in Broadmead, and Santa's Grotto, in The Galleries, will also be open for business.
