Make saving the airfield a priority

I QUITE agree with the letter of Peter Watts referring to the closure of Filton Airfield and Concorde.

I myself and I am sure other Bristolians are very, very angry that the airfield is closing.

This has been a vital and very important part of Bristol and the aero industry for so many years. Also for the wings to be able to deliver to Toulouse and taking staff there and employees. I think Staverton Airport does like the competition that will affect them. Filton is far more superior and surely lots of firms could have more there.

I quite agree that the Bristol councillors have dome nothing for Bristol. We are so far behind other cities who have large concert venues; even the skating rink has been closed with their intervention. They could do a lot more to keep this important airfield open instead of building more ugly houses.

With regards to Concorde, I watched 'The Choir' programmes and they went to Manchester and we saw Concorde in a beautiful setting; it made me shamed to be a Bristolian. Surely they could put her in the Brabazon hangar until they build the museum, which has been promised for quite some time.

There is plenty of space in the airfield. It is such a beautiful plane and is slowly rusting and it will be too late soon. I hope the new mayor will make his first priority to stop the airfield from closing.

    “@tonypmitchell
AIrbus appears to have given up on Filton as a major manufacturing site due to the attitude of BAE Systems and SGC Toytown Council. They would rather concentrate on developing new factories overseas like Mobile in the US where the local government is falling over themselves to offer tax incentives and major infrastructure investment in order to attract high value aerospace jobs.

“If anyone expects any common sense on this subject from South Glos. Council and their Planning "Officers" - forget it! They are all a utter and total waste of space!
It beggars belief that the aerospace companies (Airbus, BAE Systems, Rolls Royce) do not consider the airfield worth keeping. Look around the world and see where similar companies operate without one - and you won't find many locations. No, I think South Glos. Council just see this as an opportunity to slap loads more houses on the site and so tick their target box for numbers of houses built (A golden opportunity of bonuses for all?) If you think about it - why not build the new Rovers stadium on the site of the airfield and all the new houses over by UWE instead of the other way around? (If both have to be built!) But that smacks of strategy - not something which South Glos. Council has a clue about! It's nearly the 9th anniversary of Concordes last flight home and its still outside slowly rotting, but they can approve plans for a 20,000+ stadium for a football team that will be lucky to stay in the League! It's enough to make you weep!”

I agree heads should be "banged together" but the mayor will have no real influence over the airfield as it's in S Glos. Unfortunately those hell bent on closing the airfield will just politely listen and then do nothing.
I am strongly for the airfield staying open and even becoming more commercial to survive. I live under the flight path and work at one of the Filton sites. I have also signed numerous on-line petitions to save the airfield.
It's a shame that FABS MP Jack Leprosti (sp?) isn't behind keeping the airfield, instead agreeing that housing is the way to go - shame on him.”

“Airbus is ramping up its production rates to unprecedented levels, but none of this manufacturing work will be coming to Filton thanks to the idiotic shortsighted decision of SGC to allow the destruction of the airfield.

    “@Lanata:

That's the reason the UK is in the mess it is. It's never *anyones* responsibility, is it? Buck passing is our national pastime. I hope a new Mayor does bang some heads together. It's an issue that mostly affects Bristol employees, so why shouldn't Bristol get a veto on it?

No doubt people will trott out the old "It's a commercial matter" nonsense. Funny how when BAE and Airbus wanted to merge (a commercial matter, of course), the government stuck it's nose in.....”

“Unfortunately, the Save Concorde Group, who created the setting for the Concorde in Manchester, are getting their noses pushed out from their application to repeat this at Filton, because of the usual combination of politics, incompetence and "vested interests".

As for Airbus - I don't think it will be sustainable for them to remain at Filton for much longer. The new "Aerospace business park" that is currently going up isn't even enough to house their existing office staff (which is what it was built to house). So, despite Airbus' massive backlog of orders, there is zero room to expand at Filton if the airfield is redeveloped.

Terribly sad, and is going to be a killer for Bristol's economy. Sadly, though, very few people seem to care. We'll reap what we sow...”

How many times, the new majoy will not cover the Airfield at Filton.”
