TWO of the area's Conservative MPs have joined a major revolt against government policy on wind farms.

More than 100 Tories wrote to David Cameron calling for a drastic cut in subsidies to onshore turbines and more influence for local people to stop them being built.

Signatories to the letter included Jack Lopresti, who represents Filton and Bradley Stoke, and North East Somerset MP Jacob Rees-Mogg.

They joined forces with politicians from other parties to express serious concerns over the level of taxpayers' money going to the sector.

The letter will be a headache for new Energy Secretary Ed Davey, the Liberal Democrat replacement for Chris Huhne, who resigned to fight criminal charges over a speeding fine.

It said: "In these financially straitened times, we think it is unwise to make consumers pay, through taxpayer subsidy, for inefficient and intermittent energy production that typifies onshore wind turbines."

But Mr Davey yesterday insisted there would be "no change in direction or ambition" after the departure of Mr Huhne.
