WESTON-super-Mare's MP has lost his job as Tourism Minister as part of a government reshuffle.

Conservative John Penrose found his department had been made smaller as part of a wide-ranging shake-up ordered by the Prime Minister.

Last night Mr Penrose told the Post he had been "very saddened" by the outcome but agreed it was necessary, with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport being reduced in size following the Olympics.

He said: "Very sadly and regretfully, I am the obvious person to go. I can't find it in myself to criticise, as if I was them I would have done the same thing. It is entirely rational and sensible."

Mr Penrose's appointment to the tourism brief was seen as a boost for his constituency's biggest trade.

He said: "The good news is, now I'll be able to fight even harder for our area. I'm looking forward to it hugely."
