MP supports full rights for gay couples
BRISTOL East Labour MP Kerry McCarthy has joined Labour's campaign to ensure equal marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples.
Labour believes they should have an equal right to marry and deserve the same recognition from the state and society as anyone else.
Commenting on the Government's consultation on equal civil marriage, Ms McCarthy said: "I have always been a supporter of equal marriage and I am proud that seven years ago it was a Labour Government that introduced civil partnerships.
"Since their introduction, thousands of gay and lesbian people have had their relationships recognised and they have received many of the same rights of married straight couples. However they have not been able to use the word 'marriage', which is a word which means a lot in our society. It is now time to take the next step and deliver marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples.

"Changing the law to support gay marriage is the right thing to do and is an important way for the state and society to recognise, respect and celebrate loving, long-term commitment in all its forms."
Equal Civil Marriages are due to come into force by 2015.

“Who cares what Kerry McCarthy thinks on this or any other matter. This woman is never out of the BEP it seems drivelling on about something or other but does not seem to be doing that much if anything for the community she supposedly represents. However I wonder how this particular pronouncement will be received come election time by those of her constituents who are Muslim. Let those who want to marry get married. Equal rights for all I say.”

“I think you will find it is only a vocal minority of the gay "community" that makes a fuss. Most of us just get on with our lives just like most of the "straight" community!”

“Live and let live - Gays and lesbians should have the same rights as everyone else, in my mind
there is no logical argument against it.
I do, however, wonder why it is always SO important to the Gay community to be so vociferous about certain issues when most people are completely indifferent about it in the first place?
Its the classic 'I want everyone to know how DIFFERENT i am, but expect to be treated the same...'
Just gets a bit boring sometimes.”

.
"civil partnership fine, but not same sex couples walking down the isle in a church that is not right in gods eyes.only saying"
Shaun sounds like an intelligent and deeply spiritual man in touch with God's eyes, but Shaun, if countries with a far less secular outlook (such as Spain and Argentina) are OK with gay marriage then why not in the British Aisles ?”

“That's not "life", it's discrimination and against the law. Laws should be applied equally to all and businsses like the church should not be permitted to pick and choose which laws apply to them.”

“They need to make it legal, but with the caveat that allows churches to opt out.
I can recall a Lesbian wedding taking place in Tyndale Baptist on Whiteladies Rd in the late 90's. Obviously it was not legally binding , and the couple had to bring in a Pastor to conduct the ceremony , but the church was very sympathetic to the couple wishing to exchange their vows in the eyes of (their) god.
So, let the churches decide , plenty will be happy to marry gays, others not so much. Thats life.”

“Are the E.P. quoting exactly what Kerry McCarthy said? if so could they ask her what the opposite of straight is? hardly P.C.”
