Bristol MP: We need a new Speaker from the 21st century
Commons Speaker Michael Martin's decision to resign was the only dignified option, according to the Bristol MP involved in the attempt to oust him.
Mr Martin bowed to intense pressure from politicians, including Liberal Democrat Stephen Williams, yesterday and quit as the expenses scandal continued to engulf Westminster.

Bristol West MP Mr Williams was one of 15 backbenchers to sign a motion of no confidence in the Speaker on Monday in an unprecedented move.
Today he told the Post the decision must clear the way for a reforming candidate who would demystify the Commons.
"I am grateful the speaker has agreed to resign with dignity so it was not necessary to force him out," he said. "The important thing now is that a reforming candidate comes forward to unite the House of Commons and unite it with the people in this country.
"We need a speaker who will give people confidence and that means someone who is committed to fundamental change.
"I don't care which party they are from I am just desperate they are from the 21st century."
