Shadow defence secretary Liam Fox is repaying another £8,000 of his Commons expenses, the Conservatives have revealed.

The Party yesterday published the full list of further payments requested from its top team by Parliamentary sleazebuster Sir Thomas Legg.

Woodspring MP Dr Fox will hand back almost a third of the £24,700 being given back by the 28 shadow cabinet members.

His total of £7,984.28 – for mortgage interest, repairs and maintenance and council tax – is higher than previously known.

It brings the total he is handing back as a result of the Legg inquiry to £12,279.20.

Dr Fox said: "In October I raised with Sir Thomas the issue of the formula used by the Fees Office to determine reimbursement of mortgage interest against the cost of refurbishment and repairs.

"Sir Thomas has subsequently asked for a repayment of £7,984.28 as a settlement for the accumulated overpayments over five years."

In October he announced he had been asked to hand back £1,500, after he received two payments for a claim submitted in November last year to cover mortgage interest on his second home.

At the time, his spokeswoman said there had been an error by the Commons Fees Office, which had paid him twice for that claim.

She also said he had been asked to "supply some more information on his mortgage statement, through supplementary paperwork".

Yesterday it emerged he has, in addition, repaid almost £2,800 since then.

Dr Fox, Woodspring MP since 1992, claimed a total of £138,457 in Parliamentary expenses and allowances in 2005-06, ranking him 138th out of 645 MPs, £142,339 the following year , ranking him 232nd, and £153,316 in 2007-08, ranking him 213th.

In May he revealed an agreement with Woodspring Conservatives, which showed that he paid £3,000 a year for office and meeting room accommodation, £2,000 for computer services, copying and telecommunications, and a further £4,000 for secretarial and personal assistant services.

Fifteen shadow cabinet members have not been asked to return any more cash, including party leader David Cameron, shadow chancellor George Osborne and home affairs spokesman Chris Grayling.

The amount being repaid by shadow cabinet members because of the Legg inquiry is now more than £40,000, while the total from all Tory MPs is thought to be more than £300,000.

Senior Labour figures including Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Chancellor Alistair Darling, Foreign Secretary David Miliband, Justice Secretary Jack Straw and Business Secretary Lord Mandelson have returned money.

But up to 80 MPs are thought to have challenged requests to repay some of their expenses, after Sir Thomas looked at every claim since 2004.

Ironically, the Legg review has cost up to £1.25 million – easily swallowing up what has been repaid by MPs since the scandal broke in the summer.
