Since the expenses scandal, numerous MPs have complained they no longer automatically get to travel first class on trains – but few have expressed their discomfort in as colourful language as Kerry McCarthy.

The Labour MP for Bristol East yesterday branded a fellow passenger a “lager drinking oaf” and suggested he should “have been killed before he could breed”.

The MP made the comments on micro-blogging website Twitter. She was appointed ‘Twitter Tsar’ for the Labour Party in 2009, but famously put her foot in her mouth and received a police caution in 2010 for illegally revealing election results online before polls closed.

Her Twitter rant said the man was playing techno music “out loud” and wearing a T-shirt with an obscene message on it. She later said the breeding comments were “obviously flippant”.

She had said he was wearing a T-shirt with an offensive message about his sexual prowess, adding: “Should have killed him when we had the chance before he could breed.”

“I imagine she'd been 'refreshing' herself in the buffet car just prior to those tweets.”

“Why is it when people become MPs they take leave of their common sense. Surely this MP should have realised that her comments would have been picked up by the press. After all she's got a track record for this sort of thing. Doesn't seem as though she's one of the brightest stars on the planet. I'm waiting for her next faux-pas. Rest assured, she'll make one.”

“@Kbillies – ". . . at least Kerry McCarthy and Gary Hopkins were chosen by the people, which is the difference between those elected and those carping behind a screen."

Elections are very democratic, but on this website one doesn't have to be elected to comment and the people whose opinions count are the ones that select the green or red ratings.

Regarding "carping behind a screen", where are you right now?”

“Weren't kids jailed for flippant remarks during the riots last year?

Something just doesn't look right with a twit on twitter?
It could be that there are too many letters or vowel usage?”

“I can see why they need first class travel, it guarantees a seat in a quiet area with a large table, so they can work during the journey. I know people want them to suffer by standing up with everyone else, but it just makes the best use of their time. She really shouldn't make any comments about killing people though, flippant or not!”

“So Kerry got to see first hand what normal everyday people, such as her constituents have to put up with every day.

Perhaps she should look put her efforts into making the train operators provide a decent service as per the terms of their franchise agreements.

I think she is trying to get herself back into first class - I wonder if she tweeted from her taxpayer funded ipad?”

“There's never anything quite as disgraceful and disgusting as a safe MP's actions in their safe seat.

Labour could appoint a pink donkey in South Wales and it would sail through with a safe majority. Likewise, the tory's could put forward a cardboard cut-out of Idi Amin covered in peanut butter and it would defeat anyone in Kensington.

    Democracy is wonderful.”
