Magistrates were told on Saturday that the pair, along with a third person "still at large", carried out an assault on Mr Millett at his home.

The court heard Mr Millett opened his door to some men who forced him inside and attacked him.

No pleas were entered in the case, which will be dealt with at Bristol Crown Court.

Orum was remanded in custody while Habil was bailed to his parents' address in Stoke Gifford, until their court appearance on March 7.

The incident happened on Thursday at about 6.45pm. A neighbour heard Mr Millett screaming and broke the door down to find the 33-year-old at the top of the stairs.

Ambulances and several police cars raced to the scene.

Shocked residents gathered in the road.

Mr Millett was taken to Frenchay Hospital by ambulance where he was kept in overnight.

Forensic teams gathered evidence at the scene.

Residents in Bishport Avenue were in shock following the attack.

One said: "Everybody is really shaken up by this – it was terrible."

Another resident added: "His door is in pieces where the neighbour has had to break it down to get in.

"There were police at his house and people were all coming out into the street to see what was going on.

"The whole community is in shock. This is the sort of thing you think happens somewhere else. We are all just hoping Mark is okay."

A spokesman for South West Ambulance Service said: "We received a 999 call at 7.09pm from someone reporting a man in his 30s lying on the floor of an address in the Withywood area.

"Police were also notified and arrived at the scene before the first ambulance crew.

"Ambulance crew assessed the patient and requested back-up to help remove the patient from the property. Additional crew attended and the patient was carried to the ambulance on a stretcher and taken to Frenchay for further treatment.

"His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening."

A spokeswoman for Avon and Somerset police said officers were called to Bishport Avenue at 7.14pm by the ambulance service after reports a man had been seriously assaulted.
