Four lanes of the M5 had to be closed this morning after 1,000 chickens fell out of the truck they were travelling when it overturned.

Police were called at about 11.40am and four lanes of the motorway Southbound between Junctions 19 and 20 had to be closed while the birds were rounded up.

The truck's cargo was 30 boxes of frozen chickens rather than live birds.

The truck had collided with the central reservation, forcing the back doors open, shedding its load of frozen chickens.

Highways Agency officials, police officers and firefighters joined forces to get the chickens off the road.

The driver of the truck, a man in his 20s, was taken to Weston General Hospital with head injuries, although they are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

The motorway was re-opened at about 12.20pm.
