A man was airlifted to hospital with head injuries after a car hit the central reservation on the M5 near Bristol.

The Great Western Air Ambulance landed on the southbound carriageway between Almondsbury and Cribbs Causeway to attend to the 43-year-old.

Only one vehicle was involved in the accident, which happened at about 4.30pm yesterday.

Police and the Highways Agency closed the motorway in both directions.

The northbound carriageway was re-opened shortly after the air ambulance left the scene, but southbound lanes remained closed until about 5.30pm causing delays for Bristol commuters.
