Witnesses have told police that the Escort was seen to undertake other vehicles and switch lanes to weave through the traffic. It was then involved in a collision with a car and ended up on its roof.
The driver, a man in his early 60s and his teenage female passenger were not seriously injured, but the incident closed the motorway for more than an hour.
Police say they would like to head from anyone who saw the Escort before the collision. They particularly want to speak to people in a red or maroon Peugeot 306 estate that was driving just ahead of the Escort before it crashed.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Roads Policing Unit at Almondsbury on 101.
