M5 closure during bridge works
THE M5 will be closed overnight next weekend so that a footbridge can be demolished.
The motorway will be closed northbound between the Cribbs Causeway and Aztec West junctions and southbound between the Almondsbury interchange and Cribbs Causeway from 7pm next Saturday until 11am next Sunday.
The 220-tonne, 50-metre concrete Pegwell Brake footbridge, just south of the Aztec West junction, will be dismantled into two sections, each of which will be hoisted and removed by cranes. The Highways Agency said the method chosen was needed to avoid excessive vibration which could affect a pipeline on the northbound carriageway.
The existing bridge will be replaced by the new year. The work is part of the M5/M4 "managed motorway" scheme, which will see vehicles using the hard shoulder during busy periods.
