Love Bemmy I do week is to be held in the week of Valentine's day to encourage local people to take a pride in Bedminster.

There will be weeklong work to make the area around East Street, a cleaner, greener and safer place to be.

Emily Smith, the Safer Bristol Community Safety Officer who has co-ordinated the week., said: "Local people love Bedminster but they have told us they want it to be cleaner and statistics collected on anti-social behaviour which include graffiti and fly-tipping back this up,"

"So we have organised lots of events to clean it up, make sure it stays clean and tell people how they can report any problems"

The week-long event, which involves Council staff, the police and local organisations, follows residents raining their concern at meetings of their local Neighbourhood Forums.

"Making the area cleaner and graffiti free can also help improve community safety and we will also be giving advice on staying safe, I know the business community and residents welcome the week of action.

"We also hope people will sign up to the Street Rep, Business Watch or Neighbourhood Watch schemes locally, working and linking together makes the community stronger."

"This is a brilliant example of organisations working together to improve our area.

"We need more of this everywhere," said Ben Barker, local resident and Secretary of the Greater Bedminster Community Partnership.

Events will include the following.

• A valentines card will be given out with details on how to report any problems to the Council

• A breakfast on 10 February for local small businesses to help them with information on the best way to dispose of their waste to keep their area clean and attractive as well as reduce the chance they will be victims of anti-social behaviour or crime.

• There will be a street clean by offenders as part of their community pay back sentence.

• Housing staff will be giving tenants advice on recycling and disposing of their rubbish on Tuesday 14 November.

• Council officers will be patrolling the area to look out for fly tipping and people who are carelessly littering the area. People caught will be issued with fixed fines immediately.

• Community police and Safer Bristol staff will be giving advice to householders during the day and evenings on how they can keep themselves and their belongings safe.

• There will be a bike maintenance session at Windmill Hill City Farm with free bike immobi tags to stop theft.

• The Neighbourhood Partnership will be holding an information session giving details of work connected with the conservation area and any local plans for the area.

"Throughout the week we will be asking people to become street representatives reps to report to the Council if they see piles of rubbish or graffiti that needs removing or street lamps that needs mending or anything else that is spoiling the area." said Emily.

"Anyone interested in becoming a street rep can contact me on 0117 9031788 or email me emily.smith@bristol.gov.uk"

"We know from the Neighbourhood Partnership meeting that local people are committed to making the area cleaner and safer.

The Love Bemmy week is a fun way to highlight ways of keeping the area clean and we know that this will improve safety and; feelings of wellbeing of local people." said Councillor Guy Poultney, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods.

“All good ideas, think closing some of the pubs would probably clean up Bedmo quicker then anything else. That and a school that stays open longer then a year. Cheers Dawn.”
