Three women were taken to hospital after a car and lorry collided on the Long Ashton bypass in Bristol.

The crash happened at about 6.15am Friday morning, causing the A370 to be closed in both directions.

Firefighters from Bedminster and Temple arrived on the scene to find a grey hatchback car collided with a heavy goods lorry.

There were three women, all in their 20s and 30s, and one child, thought to be about five-years-old, trapped in the car.

An older child aged under 10 had also been in the car but had been rescued before the firefighters arrived.

Crews used hydraulic cutting equipment to remove the roof of the vehicle and the small child was passed out. The three women were placed on spinal boards and taken to hospital but their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The road was cleared and traffic was moving smoothly by about 8.15am.
