Drivers heading in and out of Bristol were caught up in long tailbacks on the M4 motorway after a multiple crash this morning.

Three lorries - including one carrying concrete blocks - collided at about 6am at junction 18 of the motorway, which is the junction for the A46 for Chipping Sodbury and Bath.

Both directions of the motorway were closed.

Officers said the lorry carrying the concrete blocks ended up on its side lying across the motorway, scattering its load across all lanes.

Traffic travelling both directions along the motorway were diverted off the motorway via the slip roads at junction 18 to allow the police and highways agency to clear the motorway of the concrete blocks.

However, because the peak period of people travelling to work is approaching police are advising people to avoid the area and find an alternative route into work.

The westbound section of the motorway is particularly busy.

Recovery vehicles have been called to the scene.

“Where as my perfectly relevent point about a mobile 'phone using artic driver I saw this morning disappeared to?

Come on BEP, explain yourselves. Absolutely cowardly and pathetic, you really are.”

“as a road legislation specialist, its not a question of the drivers being foriegn or not, its quite simply an accident, you also have to look at the incline of the hill and also the kinetic energy these types of vehicles have. i think its fair to say that the local tv or radio should of advised us all this morning after 615am. after sitting in the queue for 2 hours it finally came on the radio”

“Well spotted Chris but why do the BEP have to clarify the M4 as a motorway? What else is it?
    Perhaps the headline should be
'3 Lorries in M4 collision block Motorway'.
    Simples (squeak)”

“To stop anymore suggestions that this was caused by a foreign lgv and the usual speculation that goes on on this site, it wasn't a foreigner, they were all British. One driver sustained injuries to his head but was ok.

There are very strict rules on drivers hours in the UK and the EU and heavy penalties if you are caught but that doesn't stop a driver either not sleeping well or not sleeping at all. The hill by it's very nature can cause collisions as trucks are loaded going slow and others are empty cruising up at 56.”

“'Lorries in multiple M4 motorway crash'
I thought there was only one M4. Don't know about the standard of driving, it can't be worse than the standard of English at the BEP.”

“It would be good to learn if anyone was injured in this accident, I sincerely hope not. It should not have been that difficult for the BEP to include this info in the report.”

“The main issue with foreign drivers on bristish roads is th efact that they are left hand drive so they have a huge blind spot. which a lot of car drivers dont understand when overtaking, the best rule of thumb is if a foreign driver is indicating its best to hang back. they should be trained and the mirrors adjusted but this is not always the case”
