THE Lord Mayor's chauffeur-driven limo is in danger of being written off – because of an accident on the ramp at the Council House in College Green.

The 15-year-old black Daimler was stationary at the bottom of the ramp, waiting for a bollard to be electronically lowered.

The driver went forwards when the green light appeared but the bollard had not completely lowered, damaging the underside of the car.

The damage is estimated at about £2,000, which means the vehicle might be uneconomical to repair.

The Daimler, registration number AE 1, was bought second hand in 2005 and is used for taking the Lord Mayor Geoff Gollop to official engagements.

He was not in the car at the time of the accident which happ- ened several days ago. Council spokesman James Easey said: "There was around £2,000 of damage caused, so we are considering the next steps. The car is very old – it was second hand when we bought it – so it might be worth less than the cost to repair."

The Lord Mayor is now using a Vauxhall Insignia hire car until a decision about a replacement has been made.

“@ Richard34 - Haven't I already answered your point in part of my original comment**, given that the honour of meeting the Mayor and city's hero's and promoting Bristol and its trade is not something easily put into figures. To what extent does the Lord Mayor produce the 'golden eggs' you refer to? Has anyone looked into this and whether the job can be done effectively without the frills?

** 'No doubt some would point to the Lord Mayor's charity work or promotion of the city but there are too many unmeasurables to know whether having a Lord Mayor really pays its way - and we can easily see what the expenses are (see pictures of the plush Bristol Mansion House online). Maybe having some other person from the council doing the basics of what the Lord Mayor now does without the frills would be better. These are hard times that will get harder in the coming years - and we are all supposed to be in it together!! '”

    “@nickthompson

"Has he never heard of FIRST?"

Yes, that's why he's determined to hold on to his car at any cost.

Shouldn't this have been titled "Mayor's Limo in Limbo"?”
