London College of Music exams taken each year
Reading the story by Ron Snook of Knowle (BTFeb5) brought many special memories of the Royal Hotel.
I grew up in Cadbury Heath, Warmley, and, from the ages of eight to 16, was taught to play the piano by Miss Margaret Hathway of Tower Road.
I took the London College of Music exams each year at The Royal Hotel.
As we did not go into Bristol often in those days, I found it very overwhelming.

My Mother, Gladys Box, had to take time out from running her village shop to take me into Bristol for the exam.
She would take me through the front door of the hotel and we had to wait until I was called to enter the room where I was to take the exam.
It was a large, bay windowed room to the left of the front door with a grand piano and a huge desk where the examiner sat.
I was told to sit down, play a piece of music and answer the theory questions.
I was always very worried, but as soon as I sat down at the piano my fears disappeared.
It is an experience I shall never forget.
